Hidden Love is a gorgeous and poignant coming of age romance… and I loved every swoony second of this Chinese drama.
It is sometimes hard to describe why it is that you love a show… you can break it down and examine the writing, the direction and the performances, but even then you can’t quite capture the emotion of your viewing experience.
This is how I feel about Hidden Love.
There is some kind of magic at play here… similar to the magic I felt while watching When I Fly Towards You and The First Frost (also adapted from books by Zhu Yi).
The story draws you in with its incredible green flag ML (beautifully portrayed by Chen Zhe Yuan), captivates you with a wonderful, healing romance that explores first love, friendship and self-worth and gives you exactly what you want at the end.
Crucially, Zhao Lu Si’s FL is given enough spark and agency to counterbalance the ML’s enduring (and endearing) love. From the start, Sang Zhi is smart, resilient and determined. She is quick to correct anyone who underestimates her and more than holds her own in every feisty scene with her brother, Sang Yan (brilliantly played by a scene-stealing Victor Ma).
Whatever the alchemy at the centre of Hidden Love, it works. This is a special drama… one I will undoubtedly watch again and again.
