Full disclosure, I am a cdrama baby. Will Love In Spring (Viki) was my fifth Chinese drama following Reset, The First Frost, When I Fly Towards You and Hidden Love.
No pressure, right!
While, for me, it doesn’t reach the dizzying heights of my first four dramas, there is such a lot to like about this show.
I very much appreciate a flawed and complicated FL and Zhou Yutong is superb as Zhuang Jie. She is strong, independent and fiercely loyal and I loved her.
I am also partial to a quiet, wounded ML and Li Xian’s Chen Mai Dong more than delivered on that score.
Oh and I do love me some chemistry and this show has sparks to spare. Sigh...
At its heart, Will Love In Spring is an exploration of grief, loss and trauma. It has a darker, melancholic tone and many episodes feature some rather beautiful writing about life and death. There were, however, moments when the examination of loss became a little heavy handed.
Meanwhile, as much as I loved the show, I had a few issues with the way Will Love In Spring depicted its central relationship. While I understood that the drama wanted to portray an imperfect romance, following its ML and FL as they open up to the possibility of love, a few scenes involving consent did not sit well.
These issues aside, I am very glad that I watched Will Love In Spring. The story was compelling, the chemistry was on point and I enjoyed how the show focused on female friendship at different stages of life.
I am loving my cdrama journey!
