Full disclosure, I started watching Are You The One (Viki) while waiting for the next episode of The Prisoner of Beauty to drop. Little did I know that I would become just as obsessed with this show.
Warning: this is one of those dramas where you can easily move from episode to episode before realising that, yes, you need to eat and, yes, you do also need sleep. Or do you???
Seriously, Are You The One took me on such a wonderful journey… full of intrigue, action, mystery and romance.
The show’s narrative structure is really impressive – particularly in the first half. I very much appreciated how the amnesia storyline (a tricky trope to manage) was handled.
Wang Chu Ran and Zhang Wan Yi both give powerful performances full of delightful comedy, delicious angst (see episode 23’s waterfall scene) and compelling chemistry (the beginning of episode 24 is a highlight).
I loved that both characters were super smart and competent and adored how much they supported each other.
Meanwhile, the show looks stunning and its costume design is glorious. Hair pins for days…
While its impressive pacing dipped somewhat in the final few episodes, Are You The One’s ending was satisfying. I will miss these characters…
Ps. I would totally watch a second season of this show where the leads just design porcelain vases, practice their handwriting and smoulder in front of waterfalls…
