It gives me no pleasure to report that, despite its impressive cast and intriguing premise, Tastefully Yours (Netflix) did not live up to its potential.
While I appreciated the show’s exploration of food and its emotional and cultural significance (big Ratatouille energy), I never fully engaged with its narrative.
To be fair, Tastefully Yours started pretty well and I thoroughly enjoyed the show’s first few episodes. Kang Ha Neul made me laugh and I warmed to Go Min Si's passionate chef. Meanwhile, the comedy and chaotic energy was a welcome break from my recent diet of angst, angst and more angst.
Sadly, however, my enjoyment tailed off rather quickly. No matter how much I love both lead actors, I did not buy into their relationship, which lacked chemistry and connection.
At ten episodes, perhaps Tastefully Yours did not have the time to develop its themes and relationships? I do think that the main issues I have lie with the show's character development and narrative structure.
The pieces of a wonderful drama are all present here, but the execution was lacking. This is not a bad show by any means… I have just watched some first-class dramas in recent weeks and this one suffered by comparison. All I all, Tastefully Yours feels inessential.
