Our Movie (Disney) appears, at first glance, to be about dying. However, this is a story about living – a quiet and deeply moving drama that encourages us to cherish each and every day.
Beautifully written and elevated by powerfully performances from Jeon Yeo Been and Namkoong Min (and a supporting cast with heart to spare), Our Movie is a show that will stay with me for long after the credits have ended.
It is worth noting that this drama moves at a considered pace. I confess that I experienced a passing moment of frustration with its restraint. I was ready for the show to transition into confrontational / healing territory and I wanted to feel some real, raw emotion.
Thankfully, the drama then more than delivered - this was when I fell deeply in love with Our Movie.
Namkoong Min is simply mesmerising as Lee Ja Ha - a role that asks him to show no outward emotion for much of the drama’s runtime. Meanwhile Jeon Yeo Been is superb at balancing Lee Da Eum’s seemingly boundless positivity with her challenging reality.
Our Movie also explores the importance of the communal experience of art and cinema. I very much appreciated the show’s exploration of the creative process and its focus on acknowledging, in what remains a male dominated industry, the vital role of women – both in front of and behind the camera.
