Bon Appetit Your Majesty

Bon Appetit Your Majesty (Netflix) was a mixed experience for me. On the one hand, the food was presented beautifully, the show was ridiculous in the best kdrama way, and I very much appreciated the chemistry between the leads.

On the other hand, the high stakes cooking competitions and tasting scenes were overly repetitive, there were jarring tonal shifts, and the show’s “historical” context felt problematic.

Meanwhile, I found it hard to care about all the power struggles and endless scheming.

I also had an issue with Bon Appetit Your Majesty’s conclusion. It felt as if someone had unresolved trauma after watching a certain other historical time slip drama and, in the very last minutes of the show, decided to wrap this story up with a nice little bow.

Don’t expect the ending to feel earned or make any narrative sense…

Back to the positives... Im Yoon Ah is an engaging screen presence as modern day chef, Yeon Ji Yeong. Impressively, she spent months preparing for this role.

However, it is Lee Chae Min who steals every scene as King Lee Heon. His is a truly star making performance. Give him all the roles people. He is more than ready.

Bon Appetit Your Majesty has clearly worked for many people and I am so happy for them… I am just sad that I didn’t like it as much as I had hoped. I guess drama land would be boring if we all loved the same shows all of the time😊
