I was late to the Idol I (Netflix) party but, within minutes I was hooked and I loved this drama until the very end.
I enjoyed the mystery, the examination of idol life and fan culture and I adored how the relationship between lawyer, Maeng Se Na (Choi Soo Young), and idol, Laik (Kim Jae Yeong), developed.
Seriously, the chemistry between these two leads is pretty special.
As I finished episode ten, I began to wonder (as I so often do) if Idol I would stick the landing.
Perhaps I shouldn’t have worried so much knowing that director, Lee Gwang Young, was at the helm of this show. Like with her previous drama, Call It Love, Idol I looks stunning (every frame is beautifully and thoughtfully constructed) and manages its mystery well.
However, while we do want to know “who did it”, this question is far from the centre of the story. At the heart of Idol I are its characters. In short, Idol I really worked for me and was a show I looked forward to watching every week.
Even better, Idol I did stick that pesky landing and left me with a real sense of satisfaction, comfort and healing. And, sometimes, that is exactly what you need.
