Boyfriend On Demand

After some pesky set up in episode one, Boyfriend On Demand (Netflix) was a lot of tropey, swoony fun (think Spike Jonze’s Her via Singles Inferno). Seriously, there were moments in episodes two and three that made me straight up cackle! The cameos and scenarios are everything. If you are a kdrama fan, you will feel so seen 😊

Episode four then took me by surprise and became my favourite part of the show (and not just because of Seo Kang Jun, but also, yes, absolutely because of Seo Kang Jun). It featured some pretty moving and emotionally healing moments.

Despite Jisoo’s performance being likeable and endearing throughout, Boyfriend on Demand’s second half was far less interesting and, while he looked super handsome in gorgeous knitwear, Seo In Guk didn’t have nearly enough to do. I also didn’t feel the chemistry between the leads.

The more challenging troubling aspects of the Boyfriend on Demand device could have been explored further. However, the show’s narrative is deliberately light, comedic and, well, predictable.

Another case of a drama being fun while it lasted but one that won’t leave a lasting impression.
